This recreational lake - Is there a proper sailboat?
Buckeye Lake has an average depth of about 6 feet with a maximum depth of about 14 feet. It has a relatively flat bottom, with little shrub cover underwater. It is a recreational lake of 2,847 hectares located in a state park with 4 many, 6 and 8 depths foot. It seems more a motor boat / fisherman type of place, but because of its proximity to the house, I wonder what is the largest sailing ship (length, draft, space interior and anything that I did not know to ask) that would be suitable for this type of lake, where appropriate, including sailing boats. Moreover, what worries me is the depth water in the dry season of the summer season, when navigation would be more enjoyable for me in Ohio. It is 10 miles from home and the nearest place to me for any boat. http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/watercraft/tabid/2512/Default.aspx This fishing map is the closest thing to a chart that I could find.>>> http://www.buckeyelake.com/map/pub220.pdf Any advice is welcome. Thanks ..
I've been sailing a keel boat of 17 feet at a local lake features similar and in similar circumstances over the past 12 years. Like you, most sailors are not sailing, but pontoon or small fishing boats. However, that does not mean you can not enjoy a sailboat. Certainly there are some coves, I will not venture into the extent that a pontoon boat, but most of the lake is still open for me. Whether there is 1 foot under the keel, or 100, to enjoy the lake while the boat floats. Towards the end of summer, there is usually less to 6 inches of water under the boat when it stops at the pier, and in some years very low, the keel has been plowed, even through some mud to get back in. So what? One of the things that helps me to navigate with confidence is that it is a swing keel boat. so I know if I get stuck or water falls, all you have to do is put up and the keel and I have an extra 2 feet to work. This boat is challenging, the best value I've had. I bought it used with a trailer for 2.5K more than a decade, and have probably less than $ 500 on it since then. However, it is still light enough to be towed with a medium size car and since it a keelboat I enjoy it when the water is too cold to even consider a boat. Unlike a boat, sail yourself 4 comfortable and sometimes I had 6 people on board, however, its as easy as a boat to sail on my own. I shop for the winter and if removed and put in place in the spring, without thinking the interview. It is only 20 minutes platform, launch and being out of the sail. I am also sure in the days go easy knowing that they can only enjoy of being in the water. I think many sailors I miss so much because they get so paranoid about the depth. From what he said the fund is unlikely that most vessels whether to run aground and damage with a swing keel or centerboard, its so easy to deal with that if you do. Even when I'm sailing in the Bahamas on a boat of 33 feet, I often sail all day and rarely have water over 14 feet and find some beautiful shallow anchorage with no one around. Of course that can only be 1.5 feet below the keel at low tide, but as I said before, if the boat is floating, who cares how much depth is below it. From what you have said a similar boat 17-19 feet in size may make sense to you, but you need to look more like what you like to do. If you will not have a slip, you need something platform easy to transport and launch. You want to sleep at night once in a while? - Then you might want to go with something a little bigger. What is the capacity towing of your vehicle? Would you like to have people out? These are all things to consider. I had a year, I tried a lake about an hour away, but I found the small lake similar to yours conveniently only 20 minutes, that I used much more and kept the boat ever since. There are a lot used, small keel boats and trailers that are very Asique purchase and is likely to require little maintenance. I teach a class that uses navigation the keelboat lazer above and several small-sized boats. I'm thinking of getting rid of all boats, partly because they have less capacity to adapt, more expensive in the long run, are not so appropriate in many weather conditions. There are many boats to choose from including: West Wight Potter, Catalina, Vagabond, O-day Hunter precision and buying a keelboat used is very similar to buying a used house. Do not get caught in the attractive exterior. Do not get too worked up about the condition of the candles, painting, old tires, or trailer lights not working. These are easy, cheap fixes. Structural damage to the boat, a motor that needs replacing or major work trailer however, may end up costing quite a bit.
